Tia Carr, a 12-year-old resident of Oswego, Ill., receives regular blood transfusions as part of her treatment for Common Variable Immune Deficiency, a disorder that results in a decreased ability to appropriately produce antibodies and results in an increased susceptibility to infections. Tia has been undergoing blood transfusions monthly for the past six years. To honor Tia and other patients like her, a blood drive is being held on Monday, February 25th from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Prairie Point School in Oswego. During February we often think of ways to show our love to family and friends. After the candy and cards have been given this year, giving the gift of life is one more way you can continue to share your love with others. Giving blood is one of the most selfless acts an individual can do. The hour it takes to give the gift of life could mean a lifetime to a patient with a serious medical need. In addition, the blood supply is particularly vulnerable during this time of year when winter weather and cold and flu season can affect the ability of people to donate blood. Giving blood now can help build the blood supply and will help to ensure enough blood is on hand for patients like Tia in the weeks to come. Please make an appointment to donate blood at the Prairie Point School Blood Drive. Call 1.800.GIVE.LIFE or visit givebloodgivelife.org to make an appointment today. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license, or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Donors must be at least 17 years old, or 16 years old with a signed consent form, and must weigh at least 110 pounds.
